...Minnie Athol by Potentate won many races for Mr lennard and the chestnut mare later left Rally, Venus, Sunbeam and Rifleman, all winners.

...Results for the day: Mr Thomas Howes' Marquis won twice, Mr Lennard's Minnie Athol also won twice and Wiropi Taiparai's Keri won the Maori race.

• He is mentioned in Racing for Gold book in Te Aroha, Waikato, New Zealand which was published in 1987. Pages 57 and 58

...On the first day a large crowd witnessed the racing and in the first race, the Railway Stakes, Mr Taylor's Eclipse was 11 lengths clear when the jocky ran inside a post near the Bridge Inn Hotel, leaving Golden Crown an easy winner. mr Lennard's Venus won the Hurdles and Golden Crown was again a winner later in the day, taking the Hibernian Cup for 40 sovereigns.
The second day opened in very overcast weather with Mr Lennard's Sunbeam (a rather inappropriate name on the day) winning the Stakes and Mr Byer's Golden Crown winning the next. Then down came the rain - in torrents.

...The 1881 meeting opened on 22 December in fine weather before a large crowd. Quinlivan won the second with Derby and Mr Knox's Loafer took the Steeplechase. The fourth saw Mr Lennard's Dewdrop just beating Redeemer and mr E. Quinlivan had his second win of the day with Hone-Werakiko in the last.

• He is mentioned in A Tapestry of Turf book in Te Aroha, Waikato, New Zealand which was published in 1988. Te Aroha Jockey Club

... Not mentioned on the club's comittee or stewards until tha 1900 meeting is the name J. Lennard. But John lennard had raced horses at Te Aroha since before the official formation of the Jockey Club, his family ws to have more than a century's association with the club and his grandson, Laurie Lennard, was president when the club held it centenary in 1980.

• He is mentioned in A Tapestry of Turf book in Te Aroha, Waikato, New Zealand which was published in 1988. John Lennard, whose family was to have a century-long association with the Te Aroha Jockey Club, won many races at Ellerslie but made himself less popular with the Auckland Racing Club during the 1880-81 summer meeting. The flag starts at the meeting were so uneven that Lennard called in a loud voice: "Three groans for the starter!" That was apparently considered decidedly infra dig for the committee met to discuss his action, but took it no further when a written apology was submitted. Two months later, however, the starter, a Mr Roche, resigned.
Among the good winners raced by Lennard was a little chestnut mare named Minnie Athol, whose numerous wins on the flat and over fences included the first hurdle race run at Thames. She became the dam of Rifleman, the first and only winner of the Waikato Derby, 250 sous.
At the Te Aroha race meeting in 1883, three years before the local club was officially formed, Lennard won four races \emdash with two horses! His chestnut gelding Chandler won the first race, the Hurdle Handicap, at two miles, then came out to win the sixth, the Steeplechase at 2 1/2 miles. On the same day, Lennard's mare Dewdrop won the Goldfield Handicap (2 1/2 miles) and the Miners Handicap (1 1/2 miles).
Chandler was a remarkable horse. He completed a hurdles-steeplechase double on the same day three times that season, at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting before and the Takapuna meeting after his Te Aroha feat and wound up the season with 26 starts for 14 wins, three seconds and two thirds. Apart from his same-day doubles at Te Aroha, Takapuna and Ellerslie, he also won the two jumping ng races at the Thames meeting that Christmas. On that occasion the hurdles and steeples were on separate days of the meeting. But on the second day, when Chandler won the steeples, John Lennard produced Kenilworth to beat Rewi by a nose in the Thames Plate (1 1/2 miles) and then deadheat with the same horse in the Stewards Handicap (1 1/4 miles). Tough days, tough horses!
