Lennard, whose family was to have a century-long association with the Te Aroha
Jockey Club, won many races at Ellerslie but made himself less popular with the
Auckland Racing Club during the 1880-81 summer meeting. The flag starts at the
meeting were so uneven that Lennard called in a loud voice: "Three groans for
the starter!" That was apparently considered decidedly infra dig for the
committee met to discuss his action, but took it no further when a written
apology was submitted. Two months later, however, the starter, a Mr Roche,
resigned. John married Sarah Ann Dann THAXTER, daughter of Charles THAXTER and Charlotte DANN, on 5 Jan 1870 in Auckland City, Auckland, New Zealand.
